Local SME takes on the rise of liquid foods

From humble beginnings in a Brisbane home office, local business Slim Nation is now taking the meal replacement industry by storm with its recently launched range of ready-to-drink “meal in a bottle” and powder shakes.

The company already distributes into China and due to rapid success will ramp up production to between 30,000 to 60,000 units per month, with sights set on moving into Mexico, Chile and the Philippines.

On Australian shores, Slim Nation has increased revenue by 200% in the last 12 months, now selling 3000 units per month online alone and will launch into supermarkets and pharmacies in the coming months.

The Australian made and owned meal-replacements has become the highest rated diet and weight loss product on ‘Product Review’, Australia’s most comprehensive consumer opinion site, and gained a phenomenal following of over 20,000 fans on Facebook in the space of two short months, making it the number 1 “liked” meal replacement/liquid food brand in Australia on Facebook.

Company Director Aaron Zamykal says the rapid success of Slim Nation can be attributed to simply filling a gap in market for time-poor, budget-conscious and health-conscious consumers.

“There has been a phenomenal rise in the Australian liquid food industry, which is forecasted to grow by $1.7 million by 2014,” says Aaron Zamykal.

“29% of Australian’s skip breakfast three times a week, 22% skip lunch three times a week and 42% of consumer’s have no time for breakfast, so the demand for liquid food products in Australia is increasing and our product is the solution.

“Fresh juices can have sugar content of over 30 grams per serve and in comparison to our 13 grams per serve in the ready-to-drink option, we aim to provide a much more nutritious alternative.

“Our ready-on-the-go ‘meal in a bottle’ has no added sugar, is low in fat, low in salt, high in fibre, is a good source of protein, and contains 18 vitamins and minerals.

“It is created by expert food technologists, dieticians and nutritionists, to ensure our products have superior taste to its counterparts, are loaded with nutrients, and come in a 290mL bottle perfect for getting all the vitamins needed for the day while on the run.”

Aaron Zamykal also says the strong online support offered has been integral in their rapid expansion.

“Slim Nation employs a team of Dieticians which are available for live chat and free advice via the website and Facebook page. “We also offer free meal plans on our website, so it really is not just about a product that can serve a need but also providing the adequate support to help time-poor people better understand nutrition.” The products come in a range of different flavours, including Green Tea Frappe, Dutch Chocolate and Tropical Mango, with view to expand into new nutritional product ranges due to its remarkable success.
