An article in Courier Mail 28 October featuring EO Member Peter Nuttal, RUD Chains. Transcript below:
A Brisbane industrial chain manufacturing firm supplying the biggest miners and builders in the country has bucked the flight of production offshore, making more products here to win market share.
RUD Chains managing director Peter Nuttall said in-house production now accounted for 20 percent of total turnover, up from 5 percent three years ago.
“Manufacturing is like a dirty word in Australia now, its declining, but we see it’s an opportunity to start doing more manufacturing here,” he said. “Because of the volumes we’re doing and the niche we’re in, it’s not necessarily interesting for China or the Asian countries to do cheapies of what we’re doing. So we see opportunities to grow and continue to grow, providing complete solutions so that we’re not just competing on price.”
He said the firm had five mechanical engineers in-house so it could design, manufacture and certify complete solutions for power stations, mines, quarries and infrastructure projects.
His biggest clients include Rio Tinto, BHP, Wesfarmers and Leighton.
“We’re proud to be a Queensland company and have grown from under the house in Macgregor in 1984 to over 50 staff, “ Mr. Nuttal said.
